Safety

Wild snakes should not be approached, handled, or disturbed. The information on this website is for general education only and is not intended to assist with identifying, capturing, relocating, or interacting with snakes. Only trained, licensed professionals should perform these activities. In many regions, including parts of Australia, it is illegal to catch, harm, or move a wild snake without the proper permit.

You never know when you may encounter a snake, so it is best to be prepared. You can prepare by:

  • ensuring you know current first aid procedures for snake bite

  • keeping specialised snake bandages or a snake bite kit in your home, workplace or car. Bandages normally have expiry dates, so ensure you check them periodically and replace them as needed.

  • having your mobile phone or another adult with you when you go to places where you may encounter a snake. This could include having your phone near you when you are gardening, or not going bushwalking alone.

  • wearing closed in shoes and thick long pants when bushwalking or gardening.

  • using a torch at night

  • knowing what to do if you encounter a snake, such as:

    • if the snake is inside and it is safe to do so, leave the room, close the door behind you, put a towel under the door, contain children and pets, and call a qualified snake catcher to remove the snake.

    • if you cannot safely move away from the snake, stand extremely still and wait for the snake to move away.

  • keeping lawns and gardens maintained and removing items that may attract vermin or provide shelter for snakes

  • sealing gaps under doors and repairing damaged flyscreens

  • not leaving pet food outside
